About MacGruber
Based on the popular Saturday Night Live sketch, MacGruber (2010) is a hilarious parody of 1980s action heroes that delivers non-stop laughs and absurd comedy. Will Forte stars as the titular character, a supposedly brilliant but utterly incompetent former special operative who is called back into service when his arch-nemesis Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) steals a nuclear warhead and threatens to destroy Washington, D.C. With his team of misfits including Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) and Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe), MacGruber bumbles his way through the mission with his signature blend of incompetence and bizarre tactics.
The film succeeds primarily through Will Forte's committed performance, fully embracing the character's ridiculousness while maintaining a straight-faced delivery that makes the humor land perfectly. Director Jorma Taccone captures the aesthetic of classic action films while amplifying the absurdity to maximum effect. The supporting cast, particularly Kristen Wiig's deadpan delivery and Ryan Phillippe playing the straight man, creates excellent comedic chemistry.
While the film received mixed reviews upon release, it has since developed a strong cult following for its unapologetically silly humor and spot-on parody of action movie tropes. The 90-minute runtime moves at a brisk pace, packed with memorable one-liners, outrageous situations, and surprisingly effective action sequences. For fans of absurd comedy and those who appreciate clever genre satire, MacGruber offers a uniquely entertaining viewing experience that rewards with repeated watches as you catch more of the subtle jokes and references sprinkled throughout the film.
